This new dwelling was a design and construct project for a Melbourne couple who built their home in Trentham as a weekender with the intention that it will eventually become their primary home. The brief was for a 3-bedroom home that makes the most of the site, while considering the weather extremes in central Victoria. They wanted to use the house inside and out, in all seasons and be protected from the harsh Summer sun and cold Winter winds. They also wanted a home that provides them their own privacy, but where family and friends can visit and feel they too have their own space. The connection to outside is important not only to engage in the countryside but for easy access after long days gardening. The buildings form is reminiscent of traditional country homes and makes the most of recycled, raw and natural materials. The Z-shaped plan provides various outdoor spaces that offer protection at different times of day and weather conditions while also providing 3 distinct internal wings.
